Jess Chalker (formerly known as we are the brave) is a songwriter, artist and musician from Sydney, Australia, now based in London, UK. She is perhaps best known for her former collaborations with Passenger, as well as for her work as we are the brave, whose releases have drawn contrasts to artists like MSMR, Chairlift, Haim, Kate Bush, and Annie Lennox, while gaining support from outlets like Indie Shuffle, Out.com and MTV Iggy.
As a performing artist, Jess has played shows alongside Andrew Farriss (INXS), Lior, Damien Leith, Passenger, Matt Corby, Courtney Barnett, Boy and Bear and others. She has released two EPs, 2010’s Said the Raindrop to the Seed, and 2014’s Noctua (as we are the brave), both to positive reviews. As a songwriter, Jess has co-written works for major-label-signed artists in Sydney, LA and London, and in 2018 earned the title of grammy-winning songwriter for co-penning the lead single, Say Hello for Lisa Loeb’s winning Best Children’s record, Feel What U Feel.
In April, Jess put out her first release in several years, a cover of Teardrop by Massive Attack, which reached number 3 in the Hype Machine charts. In May, Jess was the featured vocalist on Sydney newcomers Dust of Us' latest release, 7 Years, which was spun on Triple J by Richard Kingsmill, and play-listed on Apple Music's 'Best of the Week’ and Spotify's 'Broad Chords'.
Jess will be releasing a number of tracks between now and next year, preceding the release of an LP due in 2020. The first of these is throwback-inspired Dance in the Rain (out 21 August) which marks her first original release since 2014 single and film clip, Your Ghost.
An official video clip will follow the single’s streaming release, featuring stunning stop-motion animation by award-winning NZ director, Hendrikus de Vaan.
